What is Dentistry?
Dentistry (BDS — Bachelor of Dental Surgery) is a healthcare degree focused on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases and conditions affecting the oral cavity, teeth, gums, and jaw. Over five years, you study oral anatomy, dental materials, prosthodontics, orthodontics, oral surgery, and paediatric dentistry — combining classroom theory with extensive clinical practice.
Dental graduates can work in government or private clinics, hospitals, or establish their own practice. In Malaysia, graduates must register with the Malaysian Dental Council (MDC) and complete a compulsory service period. Specialisation options include orthodontics, oral surgery, periodontics, and endodontics.
Why Study Dentistry?
Excellent work-life balance
Dentists typically work regular hours with minimal emergency calls, offering one of the best work-life balances in healthcare.
High earning potential with own practice
Private dental practitioners in Malaysia can earn RM 15,000–RM 50,000/month. Specialists in orthodontics and implantology earn significantly more.
Growing demand for dental care
Rising awareness of oral health, cosmetic dentistry, and an ageing population drive increasing demand for dental professionals in Malaysia and globally.
Hands-on clinical skills from Year 1
Dental programmes emphasise practical skills early — you begin working on dental simulators and treating patients in university clinics from the early years.
