12th September 2024 – Students from the Diploma in Environmental Health and Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health programmes at Faculty of Health Sciences, Nursing and Education (FOHSNE) went on an educational visit to Sepang Municipal Council. The visit was conducted to introduce the students to the functions of a Local Authority in terms of public health, waste management and public cleanliness and business licensing.
MAHSA students were warmly welcomed by Mr Azirol Hisham bin Azmi, Director of Environmental Health Department together with Mr Mohd Salihin bin Jelani, and Mr Mohd Halif, from Department of Licensing.
The visit began with an introduction of Sepang Municipal Council, and briefing on the department’s function, the organizational structure and the role of each unit. These included food premise cleanliness control and food security, nuisance and stray animal control, vector control, recycling unit and occupational safety and health unit among others.
In the afternoon, students were guided through a simulated food premise inspection, and practical session from Vector control unit which involved donning PPE and fogging application. The visit ended with, a brief visit to the new Automatic Drive-Through Recycling Centre (Adtrec) which operates 24 hours and pays the public for the items they bring. Three different receptacles for plastic, boxes and paper as well as steel and aluminium are available.
Our students had an invaluable immersive learning experience that exposed them to the role of an Environmental Health Officer in a local authority.
Thank you Majlis Perbandaran Sepang for allowing MAHSA students to visit and learn about the critical work local authorities do every single day to keep the public and our environment safe and healthy.
